In The Weeds, 10/6/12: Neon Cowboys and Pink Ladies
The Denton Courthouse on the Square will host a photography exhibition of the work of local historian and former city councilmember Mike Cochran entitled “Neon Cowboys and Pink Ladies” from Oct 16th to December 31th. This is a collection of photographs of neon signs in the Southwest in the 1970′s. I’m anxious to see this because I have an “old sign” fetish myself and find it nearly impossible to pass one wherever I see one without taking a picture.
Along those lines, we have the following titles at the Denton Public Library that might whet the appetite:
Celebrate 75 Years of the Denton Public Library
The Denton Public Library invites you to join us in celebrating its 75 years of service to the Denton community. The celebration will take place at the Emily Fowler Central Library, 502 Oakland Street, on June 6, 2012 at 4:00 PM, followed by a live performance of the award-winning Library Larry at 5:00 PM.
The Denton Public Library opened as the Denton City-County Public Library on June 6, 1937, and was located on the third floor of the Denton County Courthouse. In 1935, the Junior Shakespeare Club started a movement to combine the Denton County School Library with a public library. The club collected more than 4,000 books in a house-to-house canvass of the entire city. The first librarian was Mattie Wilson, followed by Bess McCullar, Emily Fowler, Joella Orr, and Eva Poole. The Emily Fowler Central Library opened in its current location in 1949, with additions designed by O’Neil Ford in 1969 and 1981. The Emily Fowler Central Library was renovated and reopened in 2005. The South Branch Library opened in 1995 and renovated in 2010, and the North Branch Library opened in 2003.
The Denton Public Library is proud to have been an active partner within the Denton community for 75 years. Please join us for this historic event celebrating this important milestone.

We have some ancient postcards here in the Special Collections Department that you might enjoy seeing. Two of the buildings depicted are gone, the others are still in existence, albeit altered physically or their names have been changed perhaps. You’ll notice that some of the postcards have names on them, but no addresses. I’ll let you figure out which one’s are gone and where and what the others are. Some are easy, a couple-not so much. Click on the picture for full view and write your guesses/answers in the “reply” box at the end of this blog post. Ready, Set….Go!

Miss Emily’s JukeJoint, 8/3/11: A windfall of New Music CDs/Denton Blues Festival
Greetings JukeJointers. On Sept 18 and 19th, the 13th Annual Denton Blues Festival comes to Quakertown Park in Denton. Perusing the website I see that one of my favorite DJs on Soul 73 KKDA, Bobby Patterson, is performing on Sunday! KKDA is an old-school AM R&B station out of Dallas that has actual R&B performers/legends as DJs. You remember them, right? I’ve heard some of the best music I’ll ever hear on that station-too bad they are lousy at naming who the artists are that they put on the air…
