Come hear the people behind the voices of your favorite anime characters talk about their experiences in voice acting.

The Way We Get By

Is a little gem of a film from Aron Gaudet, 80 minutes long and a real perspective – changer. This documentary features the Maine Troop Greeters http://mainetroopgreeters.com/Site/Home-1.html in Bangor, Maine, the jumping off spot for troops headed to the Middle East or returning from the front.   Three elderly greeters give viewers a glimpse into their lives as tireless volunteers who provide every single soldier a handshake, pat on the back or big thank you. This movie goes beyond the airport scenes to reveal some of the personal tribulations of growing old. One particularl poignant scene for pet lovers involves a final goodbye to a treasured friend. As the mom of a soldier, I expected to be touched by the scenes of soldiers leaving. What I didn’t expect was the immense compassion I felt for the greeters. I want to call them up, pat them on the back and tell them thanks. What an example.

Watch Saawariya at the South Branch

Enjoy the Bollywood film Saawariya at the South Branch Library, this Saturday, July 10 at 2:30PM. From Sanjay Leela Bhansali, one of India’s most acclaimed directors, this love story is based on Fyodor Dostoevsky’s “White Nights” and is filled with colorful costumes, lavish sets and eye-popping song and dance numbers. This film is rated PG and presented in Hindi dialogue with English subtitles.

Watch Ponyo @ the North Branch

Too hot to play outside this summer?  Cool off at the North Branch Library during our free Anime Afternoon feature movies.  Join us for Ponyo on Wednesday, June 9 at 4:00 p.m.  This new film by anime master Hayao Miyazaki includes characters voiced by Cate Blanchett, Tina Fey, Matt Damon, and Liam Neeson.

Ponyo is the story of a young boy named Sosuke who rescues a goldfish named Ponyo, and they embark on a fantastic journey of friendship before Ponyo’s father forces her to return to the sea. Ponyo’s desire to be human upsets the balance of nature and only Ponyo’s mother, a beautiful sea goddess, can restore nature’s balance and make Ponyo’s dreams come true.

Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult.  Ponyo is rated G and is 90 minutes long.
