Library Larry at the Thin Line Film Festival

Library Larry’s Big Day, the City of Denton’s award-winning children’s television show, is entering its third season. January marks the 25th episode of the monthly television show produced by the Denton Public Library and Denton Television. The show stars three puppets that live in the library: a Texas bull named Library Larry; a word-loving pig named Emmy Lou Dickenson, and Mr. Chompers, an oft-confused hippopotamus In each episode, a librarian reads a book to the puppets and they go visit a place in the community that relates to the book.

The first episode of the new year takes place at the Pratt Materials Recovery Facility. In February, the puppets take a behind-the-scenes tour of the Denton courthouse-on-the-square. In March, they go 58 feet underground as they explore the FEMA Region VI headquarters in Denton.

The show and the puppets will be featured at the Thin Line Film Fest. On February 11th at 10:00 a.m. at the Campus Theatre, the puppets will take the stage for a live show and a viewing of their visit to the UNT Astronomy Department. The puppets are also planning visits to area schools in the coming months.

“This year is taking us to lots of exciting places,” says WyLaina Hildreth, librarian at Denton’s North Branch Library and show co-producer. “It’s such a privilege to be able to extend the reach of the library and send a positive message to children that encourages them to value the library, their community, and lifelong learning.”

Library Larry’s Big Day has won several awards. In 2010, it won first place in a statewide contest sponsored by TATOA (Texas Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors). Last year, it won the Margaret Irby Nichols Award from the North Texas Library Partners. Also in 2011, the writer and co-producer of the show, Kerol Harrod, won a TLA (Texas Library Association) Branding Iron Award for a speech he wrote promoting the show.

The show airs at 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. every day on Denton Television (Charter channel 26 and Verizon channel 38). The current episode is available any time at www.librarylarry.com. Also, clips are now available on YouTube at www.youtube.com/cityofdenton.
