I was just wondering if there was a particular reason why there isn’t going to be a cosplay contest this year. The past two Mini A-Kon events, I’ve looked forward to the contest, not just so that I can participate, but to see what other people in my area have done.
Is there not a way that there could be both the art contest and the cosplay contest?

Get your costume ready and spread the word, Denise! We will be having a cosplay contest this year. It was accidentally left out of the description. We apologize for the oversight.

Does the art have to be submitted directly to Denton North Branch Library?
And do you have to be there to receive the awards?
10.
dentonpl | January 13, 2010 at 4:18 pm
You can submit the work to any of the branches of the Denton Public Library and you do not have to be present to win.
Thanks for your comment!

This sounds like fun. I have 2 questions, though.
Is there an entry fee? And about the Art Contest, do I take my art submission personally to the library because I could do that? I want to know to make sure.
14.
dentonpl | January 13, 2010 at 3:19 pm
Thanks for your comment. The contest is free, and you don’t have to personally bring it to the library, someone else can bring it for you if you are unable to bring it yourself.

One question,Is there any specifics on what type of paper it is to be drawn on or sizes of paper?
16.
dentonpl | January 20, 2010 at 12:49 pm
Any paper except notebook is acceptable. All rules can be found on the blog.

How do we submit the artwork? Can we submit it during the con or do we submit before then?
18.
dentonpl | January 20, 2010 at 12:43 pm
Submissions are due before the event, by January 27th.
19.
Mayra | January 17, 2010 at 8:07 pm
Is there a limit to the size of the submitted art work? I’m planning on drawing/painting mine on white poster board.
20.
dentonpl | January 20, 2010 at 12:45 pm
There are no size guidelines for the contest. Thanks for your question!

Rachel B | January 18, 2010 at 6:20 pm
Are the A-kon badges part of the prize list for the art contest or are they being given away in a separate contest?
22.
dentonpl | January 20, 2010 at 12:52 pm
The badges are not art contest prizes. Art contest prizes consist of manga, anime, and art supplies.
Thanks for your question!

Hi.
My younger sister is 11 and she wants to join the art contest. On a different website, I read that it’s for ages 12 – 18. Can she still join the art contest?
Thanks.
28.
dentonpl | January 26, 2010 at 7:41 pm
I am sorry, the contest is for ages 12-18. Please let your sister know that we are looking forward to seeing her entry at our Mini A-Kon next year!
Thanks for your comment!

Couple of Questions:
1. How does the public vote for the drawings? What are the rules?
2. Are there age requirements? Minimum age to enter? Are winners bracketed into age categories?
Thank you for your help!

Is there a weapons policy on certain props?
32.
dentonpl | January 26, 2010 at 7:37 pm
You cannot bring in anything that violates Federal, State or local weapons laws and you cannot bring in anything that is
larger than these dimensions: 14” W x 17” H x 20” D.

I have a question about the art contest. I was wondering if I had to submit the art piece to the Denton library, because I live in Irving so the drive is kinda far.
34.
dentonpl | January 26, 2010 at 7:32 pm
Yes, you must submit your work to one of the Denton libraries by January 27.
Thanks for your comment!

Congradulations. Looks like the mini-kon is a success. Being a local collector I couldn’t pass up the oppurtunity to check out an art show in own backyard. There were a number of artists who seem to have a lot of potential and two real standouts. Li C Burr and Kathy Cao, if you see this bring your work to the A-kon Art Show. I really wanted to buy the pieces you sent to this show and would love to see other works.
38.
Li Burr | February 10, 2010 at 9:26 pm
Hi Charles,
I will not be going to Akon Art Show This year, possible in the future. Thank you for leaving me a note. I am interested in selling prints of my art work. Let me Know.
39.
Li Burr | February 10, 2010 at 10:04 pm
Hello Mr. Charles Mahan,
We received your note. We will not be setting up at the Akon Art Show this year. Li can make prints to sell just to you if you like. Let me know, if you’re still interested in both or just one of the pieces. We archive the originals for our art portfolio for submission to Stanford.
Thanks,
Li C. Burr & Kathy Cao

Well that was pretty fun!
Congrats to all winners of Cosplay and to the winners of the A-Kon Tickets! T.T lucky pplz

I’m kind of surprised that the art contest does not have AKON TICKETS as the prizes
42.
Denise | February 5, 2010 at 12:42 am
This was tons of fun, just like the two before it.
I was wondering, though, if there was a place we could go to look at pictures from the event? I’m always putting images into my cosplay portfolio and of course any photographer would be credited if I put it, say, on my dA or my cosplay.com account.
So yes, pictures would be wonderful. ^_^ Congratulations to the winners of the raffles and the cosplay contest! I loved the award names!

This was actually a fun anime convention to go to. I’ve only really been to larger ones, but this was was a rather nice surpise. I was even lucky enough to be one of the cosplayer winners (I was the guy going as Zexion =p). Hmmm, best use of book…… interesting award xD

Gosh those two art works both together should have won they were breathtaking !!
Seirenes of the Sea by Liyan Burr and
Rydia by Kathy Cao
MY GAWD it was just so expressive with design and color !! I couldn’t take my eyes off of it when I went to go visit.
I was dissapointed and astonished by the fact that the ‘Seirenes’ didn’t win
that was like aammazzzzzing! hmm i wonder why
? Is it because she was older than the limit?… that’s not fair because it wasn’t posted on this website and she didn’t have a chance to know what age group
she might have took a long time to draw that and it wasn’t taken….
(
I would buy that piece of art work for A LOT of money(I’ll buy some prints
from you guys.. That’s actually one of the best drawings I’ve seen even if i went to the a-kon..wow pure traditional!!!
Rydia won and I was so happy for her
and a bright future awaits both of you because that’s real manga and anime art in traditional style.
she’s a real young talent ^_^
If you see this i wanna tell
Ms. Burr and Ms. Cao to keep getting at your dreams it’s wonderful
SORRY FOR A LONG POST I JUST HAD TOO!!!

The anime art contest was not a panel-judged competition, but was decided by public vote. The artwork in question received less votes than the artwork that won.
Thanks for your comment!

I have a question, and this is probably going to sound really dumb, but I’m getting worried about it…
I won one of the free passes to A-kon, but i haven’t received an email or any sort of notification at all…. have they sent out anything about it? Whether it be email or anything else?
48.
David | March 22, 2010 at 4:34 pm
Nothing will be sent to you about the passes. At the convention during the pre reg, if you go to the exceptions desk, they have your name on file and will provide you a pass at this time. A-Kon doesn’t mail anyone passes.

M. Padilla | March 26, 2010 at 2:20 pm
Oh! Thank you so much! I was getting so worried.
